Experts have uncovered online communities where users exchange techniques for producing increasingly realistic AI-generated images. As the technology becomes more advanced, they warn it could allow criminals to create vast amounts of illegal material faster, cheaper, and with greater realism than ever before.
The good news is that AI is also helping those fighting these crimes. Law enforcement agencies and child protection organisations are using artificial intelligence to detect illegal content, identify offenders, analyse evidence, and help locate victims.
But the technology is evolving at an extraordinary pace. Child protection experts are calling for stronger laws, tougher safeguards, and greater cooperation between governments, technology companies, and police to prevent AI from becoming another powerful tool for child predators.
